I think that after three weeks in China I've got a good measure of the place. Over a Billion people on a roller coaster of political reform and an industrial and technology revolution. There are the few that are riding this wave and the majority who have been displaced by it. The city's such as Beijing full of people who were quite happy on their farm land just a few years ago. There also seems to an underlying element of fear in the people. Whether its getting on the train first or the hotel staff checking your mini bar at every opportunity to see what you've taken(they don't refill just look) Don't expect good service in China except in restaurants which are pretty good and if you can book a hotel without carpets.
We caught a flight from Xi'an to Chongqing today and checked into the Hilton. We just couldn't take cheap Chinese hotels anymore. The town itself is another non decrepit city of 5 million people, hardly gets you on the map in China. The only reason to come here is that it's the starting point for a cruise to see the three gorges. It does though boast some very hot local food and an interesting chopstick sculpture. A drink by the river allows you to take in the cityscape at night and watch the antics of bar staff competing for business.
Highlights: A clean hotel
