Day 12 21st November 2006 - British War Ships - Puno (Altitude 3,855m)

We spent a lazy day in Puno to allow Shelley to recover from the altitude, after a good nights sleep she was soon issuing me with shopping orders so I can happily say that she is back to normal and fully adjusted to the altitude. Our room is on the 4th floor of the hotel so each trip to the shop for crackers or gatorade is like running a mile at this altitude.

In the afternoon we took a trip down to the lake to have a look at the Yavari, one of the British built gunboats sold to Peru in 1860. The remarkable story is that the ship was built in the UK and shipped in 2,500 parts, carried accross the Andies and reassembled at the lake. A yourney which took 6 years in total.

This of course sounds like a vry quiet day in Peru, but as always not quite, outside the Yavari we stopped for a drink, low and behold more lamas grazing peacfully in the hotel grounds. Would they leave me alone to enjoy my cold drink NO!
