Day 226 June 23rd 2007, What no Hassle? - Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh, Cambodia

I have certainly enjoyed the last 3 weeks in Vietnam. I have to admit though the constant attempts, by everyone from hotels to street children to defraud me has worn me out. It's unfortunate as the majority Vietnamese are lovely people but when it comes to money, a lot of people cant see past the moment. Hotels especially are happy to try and rip you off, without considering repeat business or word of mouth recommendations, you may have given to other travellers. With the volume of hotel review websites you can at least get some revenge.

The scenery in Vietnam has been stunning, from Sapa in the Mountains to Cat Ba in Halong Bay, we have been spoilt with beautiful views. As we left the rainy Hoi Chi Minh City (Above) behind, we had 2 options to get to Phnom Penh, Cambodias capital. An 8 hour bus or a 1 hour flight. We opted for the flight, I was also a little sceptical on how safe the bus journey would be. There are numerous reports of corrupt border officials and bus companies steeling your luggage.

Given Vietnam's economic boom I was expecting Cambodia to be years behind, to my surprise we landed at a brand new airport. The Visa and immigration process only took a few minutes and no one tried to overcharge us. There were no crowds outside the airport, it was easy to get a taxi without being hassled, the taxi itself was modern and didn't smell of fish. No one tried to sell us anything and we arrived at our hotel without being driven the long way round the city. My expectations were way out, I was ready for hassle and there just wasn't any.

Highlights: Being surprised by the relative calm and order in Cambodia
