Day 284 August 19th 2007, Up and Up - Xian

out 70km outside of Xi'an are the granite peaks of Hua Shan, one of the 5 Taoist mountains in China. Here 500 year old hermits became at one with the universe whilst surviving on a diet of pine needles and wild herbs. Good job I went for two cheese burgers last night.

The climb to the North peak (1615m) is a steep one, the 6km trek starts easily enough but after 4km its almost vertical. The path is full of porters carrying supplies up the mountain, strange when there is a cable car, I guess a sign that labor is cheap here

As you near the summit some careful navigation of the slippery steps is required. There are though plenty of snack shops on the way. The one below serving up redbull and if your feeling proud of yourself gold medals.

The weather today wasn't its best, many of the views were clouded in mist. Not a problem though as one of the services on offer at the summit is to have yourself super imposed on a perfect image taken on a sunny day.

Highlights: Some great exercise and no I didn't buy myself a medal.
