Day 56 January 4th 2006, Pesky little critters - UshuaiaAfter a few days rest we ventured off to the national park today just 12km out of town. On the advice of the tourist board we took a taxi, on arriving at the enterance to the park the meter was running at 14 Pesos (about £2) however the driver then decided that he wanted to charge us another 90 to take us another 12km into the park. Our walk therefore started a little earlier and not quite as we had planned.

After about 15km we came across a couple of
Beaver colonies, we didn't see any of the critters but the damns they had built were pretty amazing. A couple of km later we reached the part of the trail we had intended to start at (then walk back to the entrance) luckily we were able to get a bus back to town as we didn´t think our feet could handle another 12km today. At the park is the end of route 3 which is the road that runs all the way from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, a road we have frequented on our journey south. According to the sign we were now over 3,000km from where we started in Argentina, Buenos Aires.

One of the specailities in Ushuaia is the sea food. After a long days walking we found after walking for ages a restaurant with a table free. The speciality here is
King Crab, the travelling budget of $2 a day doesn´t really cover a whole crab but we got a leg in Shelley´s risotto.
Now an interesting word for you all "
Mamihlapinatapai" which is from the native Indian language of Tierra del Fuego
Yahgan, of which there is only one speaker left. The word describes a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start. In other words "after you" It´s in the Guiness Book of Records as the most succinct word.
