Day 177 May 5th 2007, I did it my way - Kawaguchi-ko to Kyoto

In Japan people like to do things the right way and always on time, a style I appreciate. However I decided to go against this today and not as everyone we asked told us go via Tokyo to get to Kyoto. I changed my question to ask how to get to a town half way between Kawaguchi-ko and Kyoto and still got the same answer, go back to Tokyo and get the fast train.

From looking at the map I couldn't see the benefit of going 2.5 hours East to then go West again, sure it would have been two straight train rides including Tokyo to Kyoto on a Sinkansen (bullet train). So instead for anyones reference here is how to get from Kawaguchi-ko to Kyoto (the hard way)

1. Kawaguchi-ko to Otsuki to Kofu (where we ended us yesterday, its quicker to get here on the bus)
2. Kofu to Matsumuto (ensure you buy correct ticket, express vs local)
3. Matsumuto to Nagoya
4. Nagoya to Kyoto

This trip involved the use of nearly every Japan Rail service Local, Limited Express, Express and from Nagoya to Kyoto Sinjansen (Yawwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnn)

As you can imagine after about 4 hours (it took us 7 in total) my travelling buddy was starting to question my logic and upon arriving at Nagoya marched straight to the Sinkansen ticket desk. One train and 37 minutes later we were finally in Kyoto, whizzing past paddy fields at 200km an hour is certainly something.

Highlights: Walking the last 200m to our hotel
