Day 58 January 6th 2007, Ahoy Shipmates - Via Australis, Ushuaia

Boarding our expedition boat the Via Australis, we soon found our cabin on the top deck near the bridge and a short walk (or crawl if required) from the ships bar. A pretty good show really except I nearly had to disembark when I found the bar only had Beefeater and Gordon's Gin, no Bombay Sapphire in sight. Making the best of a bad situation I quickly knocked back a couple of G&T´s before I remembered that the spirit measure sales guy never made it to Argentina.

Shelley was not too impressed with me when she found out that our boat was the one at the front

As we headed out from Ushuaia, a map of the cruise and itinerary can be found here, we stopped after only an hour at sea off the coast of Puerto Navarino to clear Chilean immigration. This involved some officials coming aboard by zodiac for an hour or so. Given there only seemed to be 3 houses in Puerto Navarino it looked as though the whole population had come aboard.

While at anchor there was a magnificent sunset

On board there were 136 passengers from 20 different countries, this got us thinking about how many countries there are in the world and how many we had actually visited. After a bit of research we found that there are 193, of which I have only visited 27 and Shelley 40. Countries visited when connecting to another flight were not allowed. So quite a way to go before we can join the Travellers Century Club.

After dinner we set sail for Cabo de Hornos

Highlights: An amazing sunset
